2010 Spring to Spring

A Few of the Cub Scouts from Pack 804 attended the 2010 Spring to Spring camp out at Camp La-No-Che, and all had a great time. Nate Ridgway brought both his dad and his brother Ben, and Japheth Eckhardt brought his dad and brother Silas.

After arriving on Friday evening, the scouts set up camp and discovered a great swinging vine in the Ponca campsite. The four Glenwood guys met several scouts from other areas and they all took turns swinging and having a great time.

During the day on Saturday, the guys participated in a scavenger hunt in the downtown area of La-No-Che, and Silas won a Great Outdoors pack! The boys also played tug-of-war and basketball, went swimming in the La-No-Che pool, and made some bunny rabbit crafts. They also shot BB guns and arrows, and went on a nature hike. At the camp fire on Saturday night, the boys joined with their new friends at the council ring and performed four different skits for the whole assembly. They were the best part of the show!

On Sunday morning the boys awoke and attended the closing ceremonies after breakfast. Pack 804 won the blue ribbon for their outstanding performance all weekend. After the church service they packed up and headed home.

Tuscarora District’s Jurassic Pack camp out was a huge success this year!

Participants from Pack 804 included Nathan Ridgway and his father Brad Ridgway, Michael Dare and his father Harry Dare, and Japheth Eckhardt and Samuel Rowan with their father/uncle Troy Eckhardt. The boys enjoyed many dinosaur-themed activities including watching Ice Age movies, and some great hikes and sports. Cub Scouts sure do love to camp!

Trip To The Old DeLand Courthouse

Pack 804 took a guided tour of the old DeLand Courthouse on Thursday, March 5, 2009. The tour guide’s name was Mrs. Carmen, and she was very informative and excited to teach us about this piece of Florida history.

The cubs began in the restored west courtroom, and several of them sat in the places in which the judge, the jury, the witnesses and the defendant used to sit. The old jail door of the holding cell are hanging on display up in the balconies.

Mrs. Carmen then took the cubs outside to the mezzanine floor and the ground floor of the rotunda and showed them the works of artist Jackson Walker. It was interesting to learn that Mr. Walker tries in incorporate a dog and a snake into each of his historical paintings. It’s not always possible, but he managed to get them into several of his paintings.

2009 Family Camp Out

Troop and Pack 804 held their annual Family Camp Out during the weekend of Feburary 6-8, 2009. The Itinerary for the event was posted earlier and can be found here .

The activities began on Friday night with a presentation of the movie “Follow Me, Boys!” which had not been seen by many of the cubs, scouts, and family members. This rather pleasent movie was really enjoyed by all in attendance. After the movie we just couldn’t help but have a campfire.

The educational topics covered on Saturday included: flag etiquette with John Osterhout; Leave No Trace with John Osterhout, CJ Long, Daniel Peatt, and Kaj Eckhardt; stretcher races and wheelbarrow races; lashings with CJ Long; skateboarding and safety with Daniel Peatt; a treasure Hunt (taking bearings and pacing distances) with Kaj Eckhardt; and a nature hike.

Saturday evening there was an official campfire complete with skits and jokes. Sunday was Scout Sunday at the Glenwood Presbyterian Church, and scouts and their families presented the colors and enjoyed a message from Pastor John Pope about an Eagle Scout who became a Naval Commander.

Cub Scout Hike, January 2009

At 9:00 Saturday morning January 23, 2009, it was a little bit chilly, but that didn’t deter eighteen people from having a great time at Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge.

Six Cub Scouts accompanied by two Boy Scouts, four siblings, and six adults enjoyed the morning and early afternoon animal sightings during the hike, and some lunch and fishing afterward.

The activities were led by Bear Den Leader Mr. Harry Dare.

Webelos Woods, 2009

Once again, Troop 804, accompanied by yet another set of Webelos, participated in the Tuscarora District’s Webelos Woods event. During the weekend of January 16th – 18th, 2009, seven of Pack 804‘s Webelos learned a few new skills and practiced to become well-prepared Boy Scouts while five of Troop 804′s Scouts helped them and all of the other of the dictrict’s attending Webelos to do so.

The Boy Scouts’ chosen activity this years was a timed game in which the Webelos had to pass or jump over each other in an attempt to reorganize themselves on carpet squares according to specific rules.

The activities were led by Senior Patrol Leader John Osterhout, who was assisted by Mason Webb, Bryan Vojnar, CJ Long, and Kaj Eckhardt.

The participating Webelos were:
Brandon Jones, Josiah Demildt, Alex Sotelo, Chris Cespedes, Jason Peatt, and Josh Osterhout.
