On March 8, 2010 Troop 804 gathered at Glenwood Presbyterian Church as always on Monday nights. Meetings are normally pretty ordinary and straight forward; we open with the Pledge of Allegiance, Scout Oath and Law, and the Cub Scout Promise. On this night however, things were a bit different.

It started off as all meetings start; after the opening we usually go outside and play a game of football or some sort of physical scout activity. Afterwards, we go inside for the instructional part of the meeting. This week’s inside activity was on first aid and how to help someone out of a burning building. Some of our senior scouts demonstrated how to do a typical “fireman’s carry.” This is where two scouts make a seat with their arms for a third scout to sit on. After the demonstrations, the younger scouts gave it a try. At first it seemed like they had everything under control but, all of a sudden a loud thud came about the room.

Yes, one of our scouts, Chris Cespedes, had taken a fall and had severely hurt his ankle. The rest of the scouts acted quickly to get tables and chairs out of the way as they called for adult help. I am proud of Troop 804 for their quick thinking as one suggestion after another comes; “should we get ice?” “I know of a wheel chair that we could use,” “I could get a pillow for his head,” and one that sticks out I my mind the most, “What else can I do to help?” Everyone did their best to keep the injured scout calm and relaxed. As the parents of the fallen scout are called, a car was driven around to the nearest exit before loading the scout into the wheel chair another scout makes the suggestion. “Should we use the fireman’s carry to get him to the car?” This was a great way of giving everyone including the injured scout a quick spirit lifter before getting back to business. The scout was loaded on the wheel chair and driven to the hospital. As of now we are not sure on the exact status of the scout but he is in good hands now.

In the mean time, two of Troop 804’s senior scouts were working on badge requirements to help complete the Eagle Scout Rank. One of Troop 804’s leader’s help’s to assist the boy’s on the requirements. Everything went extremely well and both scouts are now one step closer to the rank of Eagle thanks to an amazing scout leader and friend.
